An industrial complex of fish production based in the state of Acre, Brazil, deserves to be considered asa reference in aquaculture not only to the Amazonia, but also to the whole country, according to Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Helder Barbalho.

The centre belongs to Peixes da Amazonia S.A., and is located in an area of 63 hectares, about 27 kilometres from the capital of Rio Branco. It includes a modern production of fry, the first Brazilian factory specializing in carnivorous fish feed, and a plant with capacity to process 70 tonnes of fish per day.

With an investment of approximately BRL 80 million (USD 29.6 million), the industrial fish complex is the result of a partnership between the Government of Acre, the Brazilian Development Bank, investment funds, large producers and around 3,500 small family producers gathered in associations and farmers colonies. Approximately 25 per cent of the shares belong to small producers.

The project will use as a starting point the production of more than 5,000 dug ponds that were built in recent years as part of the development strategy.

During the visit to the feed mill, the minister confirmed agreements for the implementation of a fish market in Rio Branco and the construction of 2,000 dug ponds.
